Maintaining communal hygiene is a mandatory part of living in shared accommodation. The StudieboligSyd administration provided visual guides, described here.

How to clean your dorm: video guide

To avoid issues during inspections or complaints from neighbors, follow the official advice on cleaning your accommodation below:

Key points:

  • Clean once a week with daylight
  • Take your time
  • Clear the entire house
  • Remove limescale and dust throughly
  • Put out the trash

Kitchen

The official video guide highlights a deep-cleaning process for the oven. You should begin by taking out the oven trays to wash them separately in the sink. For the oven interior, the video recommends using a cleaning spray, scrubbing thoroughly, wiping with a wet cloth, and then drying. When needed, for example before moving out or if dirty, it recommends to move the oven, clean the walls behind the oven and between appliances.

Personal note: Someone got billed two hundred euros for the cleaning company to come in and clear a spot in the oven. Before moving out, make sure to make everything shine.

Bathroom

For removing limescale, the guide is very specific, stating: “let it sit for a couple of minutes or follow the instruction on the bottle.” Always be sure to follow the safety instructions for any cleaning products. The method is to scrub, wipe and rinse the tiles and fixtures. For deeper interventions, it may be necessary to also soak the shower head in a diluted solution with decalcifier and use a solution on the toilet to remove limescale. It is recommended to also clean the bathroom light and the mirror, using microfiber clothes for the best result. A way to use this type of cloth is to fold it four times, getting effectively sixteen sides. Then we wet one side first, clean the desired surface and then dry it. By using the cloth in this way, it will last more and have more usable area.

General

In general, you probably need to remove dust from door frames, door handles, windows, sockets, switches and appliances. Do not try to clean windows from the outside if you risk falling.

How to sort waste according to Sønderborg regulations

You must sort your waste according to Danish regulations. Detailed instructions are available in the video below regarding what waste to put in what bin:

Monitoring utilities consumption

Communal living also involves monitoring your own footprint to ensure the stability of the dormitory’s resources. If you pay bills based on your consumption, use the ISTA Ecotrend app to track your consumption. High utility bills can lead to financial strain, though financial assistance may be available in specific cases.

Setup the router

Ensure your router is correctly installed to avoid disrupting the local network.

You can use the search page to find dorms with internet access in the advanced filters section under building facilities. To get connected to the internet at your dormitory you must use a cable or the wifi password.

If your internet does not work, please contact your janitor when available. The janitor will upon agreement with you come to your room to check the router and your internet connection. If he finds an error at either the router or the plug in the wall, he will contact the internet support.

Given the documentation from Studiebolig on the KK64 internet WiFi functionality is not mentioned. You should plug in the internet connection from the wall socket in the port nearest to the power button, while the other three lan ports can be connected to your devices. Next month, I will update you on this as I’m moving in a dorm with internet access.
