Frequently Asked Questions about Boligstøtte
How long does the application process take?
The application itself takes about 15 minutes via borger.dk. After that, it can take up to 7 weeks for Udbetaling Danmark to process your application and send a decision. Apply as early as possible.
Does Boligstøtte require a private kitchen?
Yes. You must have your own private kitchen with running water and drainage. If you live in a dorm room with a shared communal kitchen, you are not eligible for Boligstøtte, regardless of all other conditions.
What is the area limit for Boligstøtte?
For one person in the household the limit is 65 m². Each additional person adds 20 m² (2 persons = 85 m², 3 persons = 105 m², etc.). If your apartment exceeds the limit, the eligible rent is reduced proportionally — you are not automatically ineligible, but the calculation base is lower.
What is the own payment (egenbetaling), and what is the 2026 limit?
Own payment (egenbetaling) is the portion of rent you always cover yourself before Boligstøtte is calculated. In 2026 the minimum is 28,900 DKK/year (approx. 2,408 DKK/month). If your income exceeds 171,500 DKK/year, the own payment increases by 18% of the excess. It is a threshold — not a fee.
What is the minimum amount for Boligstøtte to be paid out?
Boligstøtte is only paid out if the calculated amount is at least 3,720 DKK/year (310 DKK/month) in 2026. If the benefit falls below this, nothing is paid. For childless households, the benefit is also capped at 15% of your monthly rent — and the maximum total is 50,760 DKK/year.
Does SU (student grant) count as income in the calculation?
Standard SU grants are taxable income and are included in the calculation base. SU loans, however, are debt — not income — so you can enter 0 DKK as income if your only source is an SU loan.
Can I get Boligstøtte if I sublet part of my apartment?
If you sublet part of your home and share a kitchen with the sublessee, you lose your right to Boligstøtte. If the sublessee has their own separate kitchen, you may still be eligible. Always notify Udbetaling Danmark about any subletting.
What happens if I move out or sublet?
You must report your move on borger.dk as soon as possible — support stops from the date you move out. If you sublet and share a kitchen with the sublessee, you lose your right to Boligstøtte.
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator uses the official 2026 rates and rules from LBK no. 1628 (boligsikring). It gives a good indication, but the final decision is always made by Udbetaling Danmark based on your actual documented situation. Rates are typically adjusted annually.
